Swimming

I’ve just been watching TV and they were talking about Kids learning to swim which brought back memories of my School First year and the Comprehensive school, and it was compulsory to go swimming. We arrive at the swimming pool and are split up into 2 groups the Non Swimmers and the Swimmers, Well this is where it all goes wrong, and My Mate “ERNIE” was convinced he could swim; now he never mentioned it before on the coach going to the pool or during any other conversation. So there was lined up, into two groups on either side of the pool I have to admit I was a non swimmer, but Ernie was there standing proud in the swimmers group and the instructors are going through there normal routine, “Right all swimmers in you go” there is a mass of splashes and whoops and whistles, so we are getting into the water when all of a sudden the pool side life guards are jumping in, good old Ernie had gone into the water like a torpedo at the deep end, I believe that’s when he shot along the bottom towards the Diving section, Straight over the diving section and proceed down, At sometime at this stage Ernie then realised that he could not actually swim and that maybe it was not a good idea to open your mouth whilst underwater. Yep you guessed it he started to drown, well the life guards jumped in a dragged him out, got him around and called an ambulance, When he came back to school he was asked why he had done it, and his Answer was that someone told him he could swim !!!! Im telling you Ernie Never lived it down, this happened when we were 11, many years later he still gets reminded about it.
